Description:   Top slope of the context is moderate down to the NE. The soil color is light brownish grey. The soil compaction is very soft. The soil is well sorted. It is silty clay.
Notes:   6949 seemed likely to be a continuation of the large ashy layer excavated by Lincoln Nemetz-Carlson and Cameron Pearson on the other side of the wall. In part to confirm this, we took two samples, to compare residue both with that ashy layer, and through the deposit. We started excavating 6949, thinking it was stratigraphically the next layer. As we approached the wall, we realised there was a thin sliver of red soil resting on (and so later than) part of this layer by the SW corner of the foundation trench, and that it continued underneath the reddish soil near the tree in the W part of the area. To avoid contamination, we closed this context, and took these layers separately before returning to the ashy layer. NB 6949 = 6963 (under sliver) = 6976 (near tree)
