Description:   The soil color is yellowish brown. It is silty sand. Structure materials: Fieldstone, tile. Material size: 0.15 x 0.15 x 0.10 m. Material finish: Rough. Material construction: random uncoursed. Material bonding: hard-packed dirt.
Notes:   Originally we thought that this wall formed part of an apse shaped furnace. However, upon extensive cleaning and the removal of contexts immediately to its east (e.g. 682, 696) the stones were all found to be floating and randomly placed, more representative of a fall or scatter rather than an intentionally made wall. Thus 694 represents a North-South running wall. We located the northern face, but not the southern, unless it was built deliberately to abutt wall 420. However, both the stratigraphy and the ceramics show that 420 cuts this area, making 420 later than 694. We therefore do not know whether we have the actual southern face of 694. It is possible that 420 was built to take advantage of 694 as a buttress, but this appears unlikely based upon the stratigraphy, which shows layers above 694 that are much earlier than wall 420. South of 420 we found no remnants of 694.
The function of 694, therefore, is a mystery. It is stubby and perhaps not even a wall at all, but a foundation for a bench or some such feature.
