The soil color is dark greyish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is clayey silt. | Notes: | | 6978 was opened after excavation of 6969 revealed several different contexts. Excavation of 6978 is part of the effort to understand the chronology and usage of the S side of the room NW of the courtyard in the Byzantine house. Excavation revealed charcoal, in contrast to 6969, as well as more typical inclusions (e.g., tile, pottery). Also, rubble stones that appear to belong to an E-W wall S of this context; at this time we believe that this is a segment of a wall also found in the room N of the courtyard, 6876. In addition to the visible charcoal, 6 pieces of pottery found in this context were covered in charcoal on the entirety of one of their surfaces, as well as a rim entirely covered in charcoal. 6978 was closed when we came down on a layer with more visible boulder inclusions. 6978 is a dumped fill but its purpose is unclear. | Context Pottery: | | Coarseware. amphora. 1 rim. ; Fineware. 2 bodysherds. ; Coarseware. 1 rim. ; Coarseware. amphora. 1 bodysherd. ; Fineware. 2 bodysherds. ; Fineware. 5 bodysherds. | Pottery Summary: | | 6 frag(s) 0.05 kg.
