Notes: | After the excavation of 649, some nearly intact pottery was left exposed, sticking out of the baulk of 644. After a point, when it appeared that they might, as it were, excavate themselves right out of the baulk, we decided to remove them for conservation. Upon closer investigation, it appears that the context out of which the mug and candle holder were lunging like a killer whale at Sea World is not, in fact, identical to 644, but instead another below it. Director of Excavations, G.D.R. Sanders suspects that 649 was an incompletely excavated context, and it may be that 702 is in fact a continuation of that incompletely excavated area. It is difficult to tell at this point, as it will require excavation of both 644, 702, and the area underneath 649 to tell for certain, but those cannot be undertaken yet for a variety of reasons. | |
