| Description: | The soil color is light brownish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is moderately sorted. It is clayey silt. | |
| Notes: | Sculpted marble fragment found (5X5.5X2.8 cm.), base/moulding. After digging context 701, excavation began W of wall 540 and extended W to pit 566. We stopped this context when we determined that the context was overlaid by the harder soil to the W. This harder soil was in turn overlaid by a softer brown soil surrounding C 566. See context 706 for removal of upper layer. 24 April 2012: We now think, comparing stratigraphy and pottery dates, that the portion of 703 immediately W of wall 540 may be a lense of fill in a trench dug through the hard packed surface to its W. This hard surface remains unexcavated, but was overlaid by context 706 which dates to the early 12 th cent. This context (703) would then be similar to but not the same as the deposit underneath the harder soil. | |
