Description:   The soil color is greyish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   This context was a half metre deep pit of dark material located in an area of similar deposits just north of wall 539. Many iron nails lived inside, along with much glass. Charcoal gave the context its darker colour.
Once the removal of 644 takes place we might better to be able to establish the stratigraphic relationships in this area. 702, the context associated with the removal of a cup and lamp from the baulk of 644 would appear to be right on the edge of this pit, but not part of it.
709 respected the shape of apse 539 and underneath it we discovered another darkish layer (another pit?) that would seem to continue underneath apse 539.
