Description:   The soil color is reddish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   This area received a context number after context 721, but received an earlier number. This might require some explanation: in brief, Team Blue had to cancel a context request, for whatever reason, and the number reverted to its previously unclaimed status. It is hoped that this brief explanation may prevent any confusion.
In any case: with the previously suspect Grand Red Layer falling to pieces (metaphorically) before our eyes, we chose to excavate the area directly underneath of 721, to see if this instead would pick up the extensive reddish layer suspected by Panos and Tasos, our chromatically gifted pick-lords. The area ran into pit 193 to the south, and butted on context 725 to the north, 717 to the east, the vicinity of 704 to the west, and a currently unexcavated greyish layer to the northwest. The excavation of this area proceeded further than that of 721, but remained more limited than expected. Below it, we found more reddish areas that seem to connect to a deep reddish patch visible in the north scarp of pit 193 but which have not yet been excavated. It is quite a useful layer, however, for bringing together a number of different layers in the south central region, allowing us to begin tying together the southern region stratigraphically, which is, of course, very exciting.
