Description:   The soil color is brownish red. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We began the excavation of this area with good cheer and hopeful hearts, with the words of our eagle-eyed pickministers Panos and Tasos Kakouros fresh in our minds. They believed a large reddish layer stretched all the way from pit layer 717 in the east to pit 430 in the west. This area, a higher rille left by the removal of black layers 665 and 667, was seen as the highest point but not the only one. Upon excavation, two surprises confronted us. First, this area stopped quite quickly, indeed, around where the elevated remainder met the surrounding red area. That is to say, the hill of 721 had been dropped onto the surrounding countryside without being from the surrounding countryside. At the same time, however, we chose to extend our pursuit of this context to the south, running past our long-removed boundary string and running between the apse and pit 193 for some small distance. Roughly at the meeting point of this layer, the apse, and where our string would have passed (1009.50 N) our workmen found a pointed iron utensil, which they identified as a file. Nicol and Ioulia later suggested that it might instead be a knife, and it has been logged as such, at least for now.
The separation between this layer and the red layer below it (720) was somewhat unclear, and it might distantly be possible that these two are related.
