Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1106
Context:   724

Date:   2012/04/17
Stratum:   Pottery, Bones, tiles, iron, fine and course pebbles ~10 cm, cobbles ~30 cm, 50% tiles, 10-20 % pottery, glass, painted wall plaster, shell, coin, carbon
Description:   The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   This is the further removal of a clay and tile layer that lies above a red clay. We sifted 50% of the context (21 buckets at end of 17 April 2012). A coin was found in the sieve (#43). There was an irregular marble chunk, one smooth surface, approx. 4 cm X 2cm. High concentration of tile noted in the eastern section of context, near pier 573. At end of 17 April 2012, we were on a 2nd bucket of pottery and had sifted 21 buckets.
19 April 2012: At the end of context we had 3 buckets of pottery. The rain on 18 April 2012 clarified soil color changes and led us to excavate 727 next - a red patch laid on 724 along C 272. 724 is clearly bordered to NE by patch of harder soil to W of pier 573 - 724 is laid on this harder soil and cuts away from it cleanly. Border to W along C 272 was unclear due to context 727 which lay above it. Border to S was defined by context 697 and a patch of boulders N of the well, while the E edge was at the W border of context 672.
3 pieces bone (ovocaprid?), one large shell (gaederopus?) washed with pottery.
