Description:   The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is hard. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   As more and more of the area around wall 731 came to light, we thought it best to remove an area now stratigraphically at the top of the heap. Edging outwards to the west from wall 731, it covered over what would become 741 with a dark reddish brown soil quite distinct from the greyer soil underneath of it. The areas to the south had previously been excavated under Panos and Tasos' theory that there was a vast red layer spreading out from wall 731 as far as pit 430 to the east waiting to be pulled out. While these ideas had foundered on the rocks of contexts 721 and 720, we returned again to the northern region to complete our studies of the reddish clayey soil fills in the area. It proved to be about 0.14 m deep, containing small stones, charcoal, and tiles, but nothing of great significance. Indeed, some glass came up, but in general, the context was largely distiguished by the extremely high amount of inclusions, sometimes appearing closer to a layer of stones sprinkled with dirt than anything else. It might, one can say, relate to the stone features nearby, but this is sheer speculation at best, especially since the stones in question are not the sort one might normally associate with a wall of the grand, or at least aggressively modest, sort.
