Description:   The soil color is dark brownish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   This is the removal of a black layer with stones that is in the south west of the trench. We began this context after in 732 in our exploration of an East to West robbing trench it was noted that in the south and west this black layer overlaid 732. During excavation a fragment of a marble ionic column base was found.
20 April 2012: Excavation continued to the south west corner of trench. At end of context the south and east was bordered by a red clay. In the center and west to the baulk there was a soft black soil, to the NE a harder black soil and to the North a stone and tile layer which we excavated next in context 740. This new stone and tile layer (740) was distinguished from the present context (734) by 1) the relative scarcity of tile compared to 734, and 2) its location along the E-W robbing trench, N of 734.
At the bottom of 734 to the south, immediately N of C 687, several large cobbles and one roughly squared stone appeared within/above a red clay layer, which sloped up towards well 742 and is clearly cut by a softer soil with pebbles/cobbles. This softer soil with cobbles runs N to the area excavated as 740, which cuts it (the softer soil).
26 April 2012: Perusal of the 2009 notebooks has shown that context 625 above (2/2 12th c.) corresponded almost exactly to 734.
