Stratum:   Soil contains large lumps of clay, rocks, bones, bits of carbon, ash, and pottery. Inclusions are 50%, mostly on account of the large clay lumps.
Description:   The soil color is light brownish black. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty clay.
Notes:   Thanasis suggested we dig 769, the black soil north of the robbing trench 272, in order to bring the levels of the north side of the trench down. On the west side, 769 is distinguished from a yellowish soil. This fill surrounds well 495, context 486, and context 248, and may extend up to wall 540.
In the eastern portion of the context, some thick plant material was removed. Thanasis came down on an area that was a mix of black and yellow soil to the south and red soil to the north (next to the north balk).
Around midmorning, we came upon a layer above 769 in the southeast portion of the context immediately next to wall 540. This context was called 771, and excavation on 769 was stopped until 771 was removed. It appears that 769 does indeed underly 771 in the western portion of that context.
Once 771 was removed, excavation began again on 769 in the western portion of the context. It was noticed that after removing the initial firm surface of 769 in the morning, the soil became quite soft in consistency and slightly ashy.
7.5.2012 We continued to clean up 769 in the morning until it was discovered that a black, softer soil, immediately west of pier 573, with many large inclusions, seemed to be at a higher elevation. This black, softer soil was called 772.
It was also determined after reviewing notes from session one that 769 was immediately underneath 710, a cleaning context on the north side of cut 272.
