Lot:   Lot 2012-053
Stratum:   35% tile, pottery, bone, glass, carbon, iron, fine pebbles to cobbles (round, angular)
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark greenish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silt.
Notes:   After the removal of 780, work continued immediately to the west of it in a dark fill layer between the wall 540 and to the SW of pit 430. On the north and south sides of 780 there is the reddish layer, and so far it seems that 780 cuts into it, but this is going to get clarified as we continue working. Panos thinks this might be an extenuation of context 741, which cut across almost this entire area and contained mixed fill in the form of a fairly straight trench. We are waiting to combine these contexts at least until after the pottery has been read. There is a lot of tile present and some large pieces of pottery. Also, occasionally little chunks of carbon. There was a fair amount of pottery and tile, possibly pieces of an amphora.

4 June 2012: Since the pottery from 741 is 10th c. and so is the pottery from 782, the two may be happily combined as the excavators suggested. - RM
