Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1106
Context:   812

Date:   2012/05/11
Stratum:   50% inclusions: pebbles to cobbles (rounded, angular, and tabular), tile, pottery, bone, some roots. Large pieces of tile and ridged amphorae body sherds concentrated near bottom of deposit.
Description:   The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We are excavating this layer now as Panos thinks that 812 was yet another layer of fill in cut 784, and had been left unexcavated. This layer is uneven and slopes some 5 cm west to east.
After excavating this layer, however, it was noted that a lot of tile was present, especially some very large pieces towards the base elevation, as well as some very Roman-appearing pottery (as per Sanders). It therefore appears that 812 does, in fact, belong under cut 784, and is in fact one of the reddish layers cut by 784. This context could well relate back to the reddish material to the east of cut 784, rather than to 784's fill, and therefore probably should not have been excavated yet.
