Title:   Removal of E-W wall over 647
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1106
Context:   817
Page:   0
Date:   2012/05/14
Stratum:   Boulders (80%), pottery, tile.
Description:   The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is well sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   We decided to remove the remnants of an E-W wall roughly in line with wall 366 to the W, because the uppermost stones were overhanging pit 647. The stones we removed probably formed a corner originally with N-S wall 334. These stones continued down for over a meter in courses immediately adjacent to wall 334, but had been robbed out or collapsed in the section between the robbed out corner of walls 366 and 540 and wall 334. Immediately to the S of 817, another roughly built line of stones (819) abuts wall 334 and 817 - perhaps the remains of a later feature like a bench. We are excavating these two contexts out of order because of the danger of stones falling onto excavators from 817. Sieved 5 buckets = 50% (10 buckets excavated in total).
21 May 2012: We are redating this wall stratigraphically due to its relationship (overhanging) the contents of pit 647 (see 792, 793, 796, 820, and 821). The pottery from this context itself was Byz. 11th npd. Also, the top elevation may be off by up to 10 cm; we did not take elevations on it before digging under the assumption that it had already been measured when drawn. Top elevation taken from 819, which was laid against it.
26 June 2012: After looking through the 2008 notebooks, the wall we removed appears to be identical to the structure named wall 335. The top elevation has been changed accordingly to match the highest elevation on the stones recorded from 335. - RM
