Title:   Black Packed Soil Around Pit 566
Category:   Deposit

Context:   824

Date:   2012/05/14
Lot:   Lot 2012-023
Stratum:   Inclusions - stones, pottery, bone, clay, tile, marble, carbon
Description:   The soil color is light black. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy clay.
Notes:   Before digging this context, we removed a hard-packed surface, 827, which has been interpreted as a floor. Tomorrow, we will start digging 824.
15.5.12 This morning, we started digging 824. This context appears to have a very compact soil, even though we haven't reached the bottom of 824, pit 566 is not visible anymore.
On the E side of 824, a structure whose interpretation is difficult, was on top of 824. At the time of excavation, this structure, called 829, seems to have been constructed in 824, but we will only be sure when we remove it (see later interpretation and notes for 829 and 830).
In the middle of 824, some little roots are present, making the soil softer.
After the removal of 829, it is now clear that 829 was later than 824. Underneath this structure, the soil is similar to the rest of context 824.
When Thanasis was digging the E side of this context, it was clear that the bottom of 824 was on top of 824 in its southern extent. Along the south side of 824 near the robbing trench (the fill of which was removed as 759) 824 is coming down on a reddish hard-packed fill. At this time, it is still not clear if it is part of the reddish layer next to the wall 540, but this is possible.
The southern edge of 824 is clearly distinguished from the filling of the robbing trench, which is still preserved. If 824 has a black soil with clay, the filling of the robbing trench is grey with lime and ash.
824. keeps coming down on this reddish hard-packed layer.
We stopped digging this context near the end of the day to begin exploring context 823 in order to understand the relationship between the two.
