Description:   The soil color is light brownish grey. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   This is another layer of fill in pit C848 (labeled 71 in 2007). Panos is beginning with a shallow cleaning pass, since the context has lain open and neglected for several weeks. The pit was last excavated as 821 in session 2, until a) the soil changed, and b) the pit had gotten much deeper than the rest of the trench. We were initially screening 100%, but after discussion with Guy and examination of material being recovered from trench and sieve, we are switching to 20%. Context left open at end of day.
8 June 2012: Found fragment of prunted glass beaker in sieve; also nail head. Also a tiny bronze half-domed-shaped object - setting for a stone? As discussed yesterday afternoon at end of context 886, we will now be moving back to the N side of the trench, W of wall 866, because the fill here continues to an unknown depth. (This is at least the 5th time this pit has been considered too deep or inconvenient to continue digging; if future teams wish to complete its excavation, considerable work will need to be done first in its vicinity, as the bottom of the pit is now well over a meter below the lowest adjacent surface and perhaps 2 meters below the top of wall 616 to its NE. The sides of the pit continue to be slightly undercut in all directions, so that N, S, E, and W coordinates are fairly approximate (using measuring tape from point taken near center). Fair quantity bone recovered (1 bucket, large pieces) and pottery (3 buckets). Another bucket of pottery from sieve.
