Title:   Reddish limey floor with tile binder
Category:   Structure
Notebook:   1106
Context:   911
Page:   0
Date:   2012/06/12
Stratum:   20% tile mixed in; plaster itself clearly 2 colors, one dominant red and one dominant grey
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the NE. The soil color is light greyish red. Structure materials: hard but friable limey mortar, light red, mixed with grey clay and tile.
Notes:   This is the floor surface revelade thanks the removal of 905. This floor is likely cut by lime pit (882). This floor seems to be made of a mixture of lime and hard - packed soil.
29/5/2013 Kate Larson and Jon Meyer opened this context, which had been exposed for nearly a year.
It was an extremely hard, cemented surface which seems to have been cut by lime pit C882 to the NW, and possibly cut by another activity to the south, represented by context 1149. Composition is mixed reddish (almost pink) and grey, with few voids, and tiles mixed in as a binder or to add strength. Rossana suggested that this surface may be waterproofed, possibly related to well 742 immediately to the W.
The thickness of the floor was irregular and difficult to determine. It came up in pieces ranging from 5-10 cm thick, but the western end appeared thicker during excavation. There was really nothing to sift from the floor itself, since all material was a limey accretion, with tiles as the only inclusion.
After pulling up the hard floor, there was some loose greyish yellow sandy silt (bedding layer?) which we sifted 100%. Thanasis was able to articulate a subfloor (or earlier floor) beneath S911, consisting of large (10 cm) cobbles--the rocks we saw in the E and SW scarp before excavation--and some broken pieces of tile, lying flat. We closed the context when this rocky layer was fully exposed beneath the entire floor.
