Context:   915

Stratum:   pottery, bone, tile, plaster, pebbles, one cobble, glass, carbon; 20% inclusions
Description:   Top slope of the context is uneven down to the S. The soil color is dark greyish brown. The soil compaction is very soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silt.
Notes:   This is the strip of dark soil that cuts around the W end of wall 807. A glass stem of a goblet recovered. This context probably represents the foundation trench for the upper portion of wall 807, which is built using cement, while the lower courses do not appear to be cemented. It cuts the strip of soil to the N last excavated as 770 in session 2, and runs between the W end of wall 807 uppermost courses and wall 540, ending in a small blob against the E face of wall 540 and the SW corner of the upper courses of wall 807. Coin 138 found (E 264.99 N 1011.62 H 86.59). Chunks of plaster have been noticed on the N side of 807. We have quickly reached a new level. Shortly thereafter we have likewise reached a new hump of earth. In the SW corner the dark soil continues further down and extends underneath the SW corner of 807 where a cobble was found. Carbon has been noticed here as well. This seems to be the fill of a cut which we have now partially excavated on the S side of wall 807 truncated (?) by wall 540. Both team Blue and we in team Pink E of wall 540 are puzzled by the relationship between wall 540 and surrounding contexts, including wall 747 which abuts it to the W and wall 807 which stops short of abutting it in the E. This should mean that wall 807 is earlier than wall 540 and was cut by, perhaps, the foundation trench for wall 540. Wall 540, in turn, seems to be earlier than the E portion of wall 747 which abuts it. Context 890 to the W of wall 540 was Frankish and stopped at the wall which should then mean that the wall was earlier than the late 13th century at the latest.
