Title:   Red Soil Cut by E Foundation Trench for Wall 540
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1106
Context:   923
Page:   0
Date:   2012/06/12
Stratum:   pottery, glass, pebbles, wall plaster, cobbles, iron, shell, tiles; 20% inclusions
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light reddish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   This continues the excavation of the zone of 914 - the red soil cut by the foundation trench (C924 = Deposit 921) which became clear at the bottom of 914. Much wall plaster has been noticed similar to that from 914. Recovered glass; also half of a carbonized olive pit. Iron nail recovered. Glass base and other shards recovered from stem of same vessel. Another stem (?) and associated shards from yet another glass vessel. Soil sample taken because of olive pit and amount of carbon perceived. Another olive pit recovered beginning our second pass. Painted tile perceived. James sees the foundation of the N half of wall 540 (as it appears in context 923) as being different from the foundation on the S half of 540 in context 923. The construction techniques on each side (E and W) are the same. This could perhaps mean that there could have been different floor levels along different parts of wall 540. The wall is finished to a lower elevation in the N while to the S it appears to be still at the foundation level at a higher elevation. This change takes place more or less where the foundation trench disappeared. Context left open at end of day.
13 June 2012: Tiles lying horizontally have been uncovered in the N half of the context. The tile layer continues throughout the context. We may be dealing with another roof collapse. At any rate, we have reached the lowest course of wall 540 under which, it seems, is the tile layer. An iron nail and glass recovered. Photo 2012 593-594. In the middle of the context at the E most point a black patch remains. We are thus changing to a new context (928).
