Title:   Compact brown - extension of 970
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1107
Context:   978
Page:   0
Date:   2013/04/02
Stratum:   Stone (pebbles), ceramics, tile, carbon, bone, painted plaster, glass, shell, marble
Description:   The soil color is light reddish brown. The soil compaction is hard. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   978 is the continuation of 970; we began a new context in case of contamination. Some pieces of painted plaster were found near the SW extent. 978 partially overlies the area of harder, more compact, paler sediment exposed by 976. Excavation on April 2 2013 began in the SW and concentrated there; it began to expose pockets of redder soil beneath, with more pieces of plaster visible in the sediment. Having completed the excavation of the area NE of wall 366 and SW of the more compact, paler sediment, we move to the area NE of the more compact, paler sediment.
This area NE of the compact appears darker.
It is left open at the end of the day (April 2 2013).
We continued the context on April 3, 2013. When we arrived in the morning, armament had escalated to the big pick for the push eastward. We continued to find painted plaster in the area south of wall 807. Work proceeding slowly; M.B. goes to assist in screening. There is also a noticeable number of fragments of marble revetment.
Just east of the area of compact paler soil, Panos found a fragment of white tesselated mosaic surface; 2m to the east Tasos found a smaller fragment of same.
Between these spots Panos began to expose a deposit of harder, redder soil, clearly discernable with a pick.
A large fragment of tile in Corinthian Tile Fabric found just west of 956 (not kept). GDRS observed in the field a fair amount of kickup (Hellenistic shapes) from this area as well. Further, a fragment of a marble object with a curved profile and lip (base?) from this area.
Siga siga, even only screening 20%. At least the kounoupia seem to have cleared up.
A fragment of a terracotta lionhead spout found by Panos ~1m West of 965 and ~1m North of pit C848; just above the interface with the more compact reddish deposit below. GDRS in the field suggests it may have come from the roof of the South Stoa.
We take a soil sample for water sieving in the centre of the context in order to have a control for other contexts.
A fragment of marble egg-and-dart moulding found ca. 0.5m South of wall 807, ~0.3m W of 430.
Tasos uncovered an area of less compact, darker sediment along the South face of Wall 807, perhaps to be associated with that wall; it extends ~0.1m South from the wall. Panos traces this darker soil East to West along the wall extending South to a width of ca. 0.4m.
This excavation south of wall 807 also exposed a stone lip extending South from below 807 ca. 0.1m and east from 915 ca. 0.4m.
After a day of finding little in the screen, HG suggested we reduce the sieve percentage from 1 in 5 to 1in 10; we agree and do so.
The darker strip south of wall 807 continues to the west, south of pit 915 and abutting wall 747 to the west.
Concentrations of darker soil and charcoal appear in the underlying deposit in the NW corner of the context ca. 0.5 m South of 918 and 0.5 m east of pit 926.
After a brief rain we finish excavation in the area between the hard white deposit in the west and the cut 956 in the east, and from wall 807 in the north to pit 848 and wall 313 in the south. As excavation proceeds east, we measure the extents of this SW sector.
Almost immediately upon moving east, Panos finds a coin in situ (2013-21) N-1010.76; E- 267.74; El- 86.25
Context left open at end of day (April 3, 2013).
[4 April 2013]
A fragment of a terracotta face (under lifesize; mask?) found ca. 0.5m N of the second stone from the W of wall 941. A fair amount of tile fragments from this area.
E of pit C430, with the removal of 978, Panos identifies the N and S edges of a darker, less compact sediment, probably to be identified as a robbing trench. Pieces of plaster are visible in this darker sediment.
N of this E-W strip of darker sediment, 978 abuts a harder, redder sediment with visible tile, probably the same as that underlying 978 S of the darker sediment.
We finish excavating 978 to its extents, to the E cut by 886, measure, draw and photograph.
