Description: | Top slope of the context is level down to the N. The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes: | We opened this context to investigate the northern-most extent of the baulk under Wall 540, north of Wall 992. This was a fairly small context and yielded only ceramic sherds and tiles. At the end of the context, we came down on a layer of tiles laying falt. Currently, we theorize that the construction of wall 992 and/or its possible robbing trench cut through this layer, which is likely equal to 974 on the south side of the wall. Later note: While 974 did extend into this area intially, the portion of that context north of Wall 992 was left at a higher level due to the differences in the soil over Wall 992, excavated in the cleaning context 985. At that time, we did not recognize this northern extension as part of 974, but we now believe that it is in fact equal.
