Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1107
Context:   996

Date:   2013/04/04
Stratum:   Stones (pebbles), ceramics, tile, bone, painted plaster, glass
Description:   The soil color is light reddish brown. The soil compaction is hard. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   We begin excavating 996 upon completion of 978. GDRS considers that we should remove the deposit of pale, compact sediment (that protruded through 978) prior to excavating the harder, redder sediment exposed to the E of it. This necessitates removing 996, which appears to partially overlay the pale compact sediment.
At the S extent, the excavation of 996 uncovers a worked block in line with wall 366.
Panos came upon 4 fragments of an antefix ca. 1m north of wall 366 and E of cut 926. in the same area was found a piece of bone worked into a "mushroom" shape.
The underlying deposit being exposed at N and S has a noticeable amount of tile fragments (20%?)
The SE extent of the context reveals a lip of the more compact, paler sediment as that along the E extent (DD; this is disputed by Panos; will dig with following)
A roughly rectangular area along the S; below 996 is darker sediment and with a greater concentration of ceramics.
We will proceed with the excavation of the more compact, paler sediment (998).
