Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the N. The soil color is light brownish brown. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   This context was opened in order to explore the NW semi-circular cut into the bedrock in the SE quadrant of shop VI. The soil is compacted on the top layer but is looser below. Thus far it seems this fill is overlaying the bedrock, as the soil has remained consistent throughout excavation here. This fill was likely cut by the foundation trench (86) for wall 38 and the later robbing trench for wall 44 (context 65).
An early-dated loomweight was uncovered- it had a stamp of a head preserved on its front and an olive pit was also discovered here. Further excavation also showed that the cut of the context (106) is deeper than the cut of context 105 (deposit 101). Additionally, the sides are not sharp but curve gradually downward and the diamter of the base is narrower than the diameter of the top of the cut. This looks like a posthole, and might be part of an olive press. We will therefore close this context and continue excavation of the other circular cuts in this quadrant.
