Stratum:   80% tile fragments and pottery, common small flecks of carbon
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light brownish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Soil is much wetter than 110 and less carbon and more ceramic finds.
This context was begun when we reached water. Many burnt tile fragments have come out of this context and we are counting it separately. There is also a burnt piece of pottery. Marios is having trouble breathing at this depth. From a depth of 8.93 (el. 72.55) came a large fragment of TC stateuette. This soil actually has a lot of carbon in it. We also found two possible whitish limestone gragments from the wellhead also come from about the middle of the context. It is very difficult to maintain tight stratigraphic control because everything is coming from below water and is found in the water seive.
Unburnt tile: 93 - 2.8kg
Burnt tile: 77=19.9kg
May 26: Overnight almost 100 liters of water accumulated in the well. El. 72.47 or 9.02m below the wellhead. We remove it and continue this context. There are many tile fragments, mixed with pottery. We stop when we hit a level that is mostly sherds. This is just past the arbitrary change point. A piece of very modern looking glass came out of this context. Perhaps intrusive from the Peirene Channel between the wells. Four small piece of limestone that could be wellhead also are out. Tile: Unburnt: 55 = 17.5kg; burnt 18 = 7.4kg
July 22: The tiles are not burnt but likely stained by iron in the water. All of the bones from this context are similarly stained a yellowish-brown color.
