Lot:   Lot 2015-069
Stratum:   20% coarse pebbles, 10% carbon inclusions in pockets, 10% clay like grey, green, red, and black inclusions, 2% compacted pebble sized red soil
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the N. The soil color is light reddish brown. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   This context was opened to excavate the fill of a circular cut within an already circular cut (113/115). The context was changed due to the new cut, a slightly changing soil (redder than what was above), and a pot that appeared in situ (mouth of pouring vessel exposed upwards). Excavation has unearthed very little bone, but a considerable amount of pottery, including a nearly complete miniature pouring vessel. The slope of the cut appears vertical thus far and the possibly in situ vessel may be in fact in situ. The soil contains greyish-white-green clay like soil inclusions and a denser amount of carbon. Small pockets of reddish pink inclusions are also increased. A ring was unearthed at el. 81.04. Some cobble sized stones have as well.
28-5-15: Excavation has continued in the pit with the goal of bringing the soil down around the possibly in situ pot for photogrammetry. The soil is slightly more mottled than it was yesterday, with larger patches of clay like soil colored green, grey, red with a dark brown soil base. Small chunks of red soil that crumbles when pressed in the hand also continue to be unearthed. Carbon is also being found in slightly larger chunks (pebble sized). It appears that the vessel sits on a layer of soil overlying a tile fragment. Small cobbled stone sits on its eastern side. The soil has been dug to a level lower than the stones in the west and a pottery sherd was found to underly the lowest stone. Two coins were recovered from the water sieve.
After photogrammetry was conducted on the nearly intact vessel, it was lifted from the soil with the previously mentioned stones. Its top el. Was 81.145 m. The bottom el. Was ca. 80.945 m. Beneath the tile sitting below the pot, the soil has significantly less clay-like inclusions, slightly less carbon inclusions, and about 10% cobble sized rocks. Due to the proximity to bedrock, it was decided to include this within the current context. Though the pit is tapering, the bottom of the bedrock has not yet been reached. Thus, a new context will be opened to represent the second fill within this second cut.
