Description:   The soil color is dark brownish black. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is well sorted. It is clay.
Notes:   7/4/16
We begin to excavate the dark soil from the rectangular cut into the more rocky red matrix (310, 449) along the west wall of the room. The soil is very dark and soft. There are some roots running through the northern end of the context. There are also a few large irrugular stones (c.20-30 cm). There is a relatively low concentration of pottery and a small amount of bone. There does not appear to be any modern matertial in this deposit [this changed later].
Especially in the northern end of the deposit, there are a large number of large burnt clay nodules, irregualr in shape. These increase in concentration as we excavate lower. We retain these in the excavation area for further examination and collect one as a sample with the small finds. The soil continutes to be very dark and full of carbon, so we take a soil sample for flotation. The concentration of pottery and other material remains very low.
The boundary between the soil of 298 and the red soil into which it cuts remains clear, both in terms of color and composition/inclusion. 298 runs up to the face of the west wall.
The deposit continutes very deep. The soil continues to be very dark and extremely clayey. There is minimal pottery, and some bone/most appears to be from small animals). From the sieve, there are many small pieces of charcoal and a few fragments of iron. Based on the presence of a metal bowl and the appearance of some of the pottery glaze, this deposit is modern, and is most likely backfill from Broneer's excavation.
We send two samples of the clay nodules to Pietri for Emilio to examine (compositiuons, degree of baking, etc.)
Near the bottom of the deposit, there are a large number of medium-to-large-sized stones (20-50 cm). At this level, the soil becomes looser and redder, signalling the end of the filling operation with the black soil. However, this redder soil is still very clayey and contains modern material (metal cans). Because of this, we decide to continue excavating this as the same context. However, we will not continue to sieve 100% of the soil, given the date of the material.
The excavation of this deposit continues to expose the face of the west wall, which now is 4 courses fall/deep. This is much deeper than the other stoa walls and indicates a need for much deeper foundations (sloping bedrock or previous occupation levels are possible explanations to be explored with further excavation).
N.B. Pit was definitely dug by Broneer
