Title:   West wall of shop VI (6)
Category:   Structure
Notebook:   1109
Context:   38
Date:   2015/05/14
Description:   Structure materials: limestone. Material size: 1.24 x 0.67 x 0.48. Material finish: roughly hewn. Material construction: ashlar. Material bonding: none.
Notes:   The entirety of this wal is not yet known. 3 blockas are visible, roughly hewn, and ashlar. It seems to go under context 17, the bench. Measurements of the wall were taken to the southernmost visible extent of the block, which is obscured by the bench (context 17) and some soil. Upon the wall is a piece of white marble rivetment. Located on the southernmost extent, directly in the middle of the wall and without soil underneath it (see top plan), there are 3 blocks in this wall that are visible, without any mortar or cement between them. The wall depth is not yet known. The 2nd and 3rd block moving south are more narrow than the 1st. The marble rivetment is on the 3rd block. No tool marks are visible. The wall was overlaid by context 15.
29-05-15: Average block dimensions: approximately 1.24 x 0.67 x 0.48 m
We were able to uncover the northern extent of this wall after more excavation The rest of the wall visible is the lower level, set into FTs on the E and W sides just identified today. The northernmost block visible extends below the northern martyr of the mosaic room and under wall 19. This lower course is about 0.08 m wider than the course above it, perhaps to add stability to the construction.
At the intersection of walls 38 and 44 there is a very large square limestone block, dimensions 1.70 x 1.24 m. The presence of this block sugests that the planning and construction of the original south stoa rooms was careful and deliberate. Though it is difficult to tell with the martyr and wall 19, it looks like three blocks were placed between these large square blocks which were located at the corners of the shop. There appears to be a similar one at the eastern extent of wall 44 below wall 18.
Finding the FT's for this wall was difficult, as the soil flanking the wall blocks was so compacted we mistook it for bedrock. This was the same along the sides of wall 44.
