Title:   Pebbly matrix in center of room
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1110
Context:   424
Date:   2016/04/18
Lot:   Lot 2016-001
Stratum:   c.80% inclusions with many pebbles and stones (c.5-20 cm)
Description:   The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey sand.
Notes:   18/4/16
We begin to remove the pebbly matrix from the north-central area of the room. We began excavating from the edge of Broneer's eastern trench in order to expose the deposit in section first (--if any modern contamination is present, this is where it comes from). A small patch of clearly modern wash is removed as context 427.
This deposit covers the consolidated red deposit (surface?) to the west (449). It continues south until it cuts a line of slightly different material (456) level with the southern bothros (cut 361).
There is a large amount of prehistoric material from this context (pottery, chert, and obsidian) and very little identifiable historical material (dirty, in the field). There is very little bone. There is almost no carbon in the soil, especially compared to upper levels where there was a large amount of charcoal.
This deposit ends up being quite deep on the southern end (c.30-35 cm) and sits on top of a more consolidated clayey matrix that is full of small stones (438).
19/4/16
In the southern area of the context, the layer below 424 is the deep packing of cobbles visible in the scarp of 298. The red clay layer to the north sits on top of this cobble fill, at least in section. In the northern area, the soil contains many more small stones. The surface exposed in this area does not contain cobbles.
