Stratum: | darker reddish/orange brown silty sand; ceramic and bone inclusions
Description: | Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is moderately sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes: | We open this context to continue to remove the fill we came down upon in the excavation of context 443. This fill is slightly looser and more clay-ey than that of 443. It is also darker and more similar to the 'basa' that was excavated in parts of conext 323. As we continue to excavate, we expose a vertical face of bedrock (or redeposited bedrock/stereo) in the southern end which bounds this pit. It seems likely that this fill is related to the construction of the retaining wall built by Broneer (structure 327), which serves as the N boundary for this pit. One scenario may be that Broneer had somehow tunneled/dug underneath some of the still-intact levels encountered higher in this area (from the E/sondage?), things began to become unstable, and he shored up the edge with the wall to preserve the surfaces above, but also filled in the gap behind the wall (and this is what we are digging). More research may ne necessary to detemine what exactly the process was here. Note (4/26): we have decided to treat this as ancient fill (not Broneer disturbance), along with the other fill that fills the stereo pits in this area. Coin 117 from sieve
