Stratum:   pottery, some cobbles, small to coarse rounded (very few) to angular spherical to tabular pebbles, bone, small bits of clay
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the SE. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   this was the first new context excavated 6/6. after we finished the large pit cut into the bedrock (579) that was cut into and laid over part of 580. the cut was responsible for the suddent drop in 580: its westernmost portion was unscatched, but towards the southeast part of it had been cut away, with remainder laid under the bottom of the cut.
In both the west and south the bedrock seems, based on the scarp, to continue straight down, as thought cut. Perhaps the area was a natural gully, which was initially cut vertically and filled, then the steps were cut later.
Removal of 580 showed that it did notcontinue as far SE as we initially thought. Below it in the NW corner of the room was a reddish but less rocky patch of soil (583); to the SE, a rocky, softer, darker context to be excavated after 583 (584). We think that they are probably part of the same filling action, but we are excavating them separately because of the difference in soil.
