Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light brownish brown. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   This context was opened to excavate a surface extending across the SE quadrant of shop VI. We hope to further explore and better understand the nature of the robbing trrenches and foundation trenches of the north-south and east-west wall. The soil is light brownish brown and easily removed with a pick. In the southwest corner of the context and large patch of charcoal/carbon remnants was unearthed. It is in this area that a possible cut was discovered - approximately 40cm east of the west boundary a bedrock surface was unearthed that extends further east. The 40cm of soil west of the bedrock surface is light brownish brown, but with far more carbon inclusions (approx. 30%). This soil will not be excavated within this context. Further exploration of the linear cut into bedrock indicates that the cut is not parallel with the stoa's North-South walls, and may be associated with an earlier structure. Further exploration indicates that the cut is not completely linear. In the south, the cut is approximately 40 cm east of the western boundary. However, the cut curves into the west, and is approximately 10 cm from the western boundary. A coin was found in the sieve. Shortly thereafter a coin was found in context, el 81,40. Continued excavation has revealed red limestone bedrock, as has been observed elsewhere in the room. The bedrock creates a nearly flat surface, with some ridges and platueaus approximately 203 cm above the lowest flat surfaces. Large black bead of polished stone found and noted on plan. 5 coins were found in the sieve from two zembels. Another coin was found in situ, el. 81.43m.
