Context:   84
Date:   2015/05/22
Lot:   Lot 2015-056
Stratum:   20% coarse pebbles, 10% fine pebbles, 2% charcoal, 10% cobbles
Description:   Top slope of the context is even. The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   This context was begun for two reasons: there was a noticeable cut into 79 and the soil was lighter and softer. Because of this context's proximity to wall 44, it is most likely the robbing trench. The north edge of this context is arbitrary. To the SE, this robbing trench probably cuts the drain found while digging 79. Primarily, the purpose of digging this context is to explore the southern boundary and find out if it cuts the drain. A coi was found on the south side of the context at an elevation of 81.39. The excavator noted is may have been embedded on the side of the cut into 79. There are more coarse pebbles on the eastern boundary as we approach a possible continuation of the drain found in 79.

The soil is similar to that found in the N-S robbing trench, context 37, with loose, yellowish brown mixed with coarse pebbles and cobbles. The drain (contexts 89 and 90) does not appear to cut into this robbing trench. The relationship between this context and the drain is still unclear. It is possible that the drain was robbed along with the wall blocks in this area. A clear distinctionhas been found on this context's south side, separating the robbing trench from the surface of the south room of shop VII. The N-S extent has been expanded to further investigate the possibility of two layers of robbing trench and foundation trench as found to the east of this context along the same wall. Where the floor of the NW quadrant seems to approach the EW wall, a clear difference in soil color (lighter, more compact) appeared in the scarp beneath the rubble layer. We will continue to dig the context down to the foundation course level and then approach the revealed floor. The soil below in the robbing trench itself is mixed yellowish and reddish brown, like that in 37. The scarp revealed a clear rubble layer, floor, and then rubble/soil fill in the NW quadrant.
The foundation course has been revealed, and as expected is in line with the eastern section of the EW wall (wall 44). To the north, bedrock seems to abutt the foundation course and continues 20cm to the north. Immediately north of this is a compacted clayier soil with black and red inclusions. Bedrock could not be found immediately below it, thus the context was closed. This area requires further exploration. The southern extent of the foundation course appears to be beneath the martyr left between this context and context 90 (drainage channel 89). Along the southern scarp a light yellowish brown soil overlays a stratum of carbon. Further exploration of floor surface 79 and its layers below will have to be conducted to better understand the nature of these strata.
