Description:   The soil color is light reddish brown. It is sandy silt. Structure materials: Ceramic tiles. Material size: L 0.14 x W 0.08 x D 0.03. Material finish: mold made. Material construction: one course. Material bonding: unclear, looks like soil.
Notes:   This appears to be a tile floor or subfloor at an elevation similar to that of the tile threshold under Context 1001. They may be associated. This floor is primarily to the south of pier base 920. It was cut by cut 1009 for Grave 2016-08. The tiles are not laid in a regular fashion. Many appear to be broken pieces of tile put into this flooring. It is possible that they servd as a leveling subfloor for an overlying floor excavated in 1990 or earlier (1930s?).
Later Note (06/08): The removal of the context beneath this structure (Context 1017) revealed a scattering of thick marble tiles.
