Notes:   In the process of exploring Grave 2016-08 further in context 1015, we came down on a tile covering in the west end of the area contained by cut 1009. The tiles are arranged in almost a cross shape with one subrectangular tile on the west side that may be contiuing into the west scarp of cut 1009. It does not continue, but stops at the west scarp of cut 1009. There is a stone to the south of this tile and another rectangular tile to the east of both of these. A 3rd rectangular curved tile is perpendicular to the 2nd tile. It is the smallest of the three. The 2nd tile is also curved (concave). This covering likely indicates a burial.
Partial removal of the tile revealed we had mad an error - more tiles go under the soil to the west and part of the foot of a burial became visible. At the same time a skull appeared to the east, indicating two burials without a distinctive cut. The rest of the structure was left in place and our attention shifted to the burial.
Later note: Upon consideration of the order of events, it was determined that the tiles of the structure were resting on top of the same soil that was covering the skull mentioned above. Thus, the tile is later than the burial indicated by the skull to the east. Due to this, I felt it was prudent to try to find the other side of the tile structure to the west. Excavation was thus focused in the SW corner of the church just beyond the west side of cut 1009.

In excavating context 1018 and 1019 to the west, we exposed the cut mark for this burial. Upon digging the fill (1020) we came down on the western portion of the remaining tile structure. It consists of another rectangular concave tile. The west edge of the large rectangular tile found earlier overlaid the east edge of this large tile as well as smaller, more elongated E-W oriented tile north of and below the large tile. The wood found in the fill (1020) is ca. 10-12 cm above the surface of the large tile, at its south west end.

In removing the overlying tiles of the covering in the west end, we uncovered a cranium at the west end of the area beneath these tiles. Another ceramic tile was revealed on the south side of the area, over the right (south) side of the chest. It was similar to the one that was situated under the large tile in the western portion of the structure. When this originally visible tile was completely exposed, it appeared to be one of the tiles lining the grave as it is long, rectangular, and concave situated on the north side of the burial beside the inhumation forming a sort of ledge of the burial. There was also a marble tile removed from on top of the middle of the skeleton, previously thought to be a larger stone. A similar marble tile was lining the north side of the grave.
