Title:   Orange-y Clay Soil in Apse
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1110
Context:   1043
Date:   2016/06/16
Stratum:   Fine, medium, and coarse subangular spherical pebbles, medium rounded and subangular, tabular pebbles, few cobbles, tile fragments; overall: 40%
Description:   Top slope of the context is uneven. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is moderately sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   This context is an orange-y level found under a fill level, which was beneath the limestone/mortar dust surface. It was quite uneven, with the fill above cutting into this level on the east and south sides. However, the orange-y clay did extend across the whole apse section. I had originally thought the soil was more clay-ey, but after feeling it, it appears more silty with a fair amount of clay mixed in. The color of the clay mixed in is orangeish but has been labeled "reddish"as there is no "orangeish" option in the data base. These clay inclusions appeared more at the top of the layer than further down. However, they still appear in chunks throughout the fill. There are also some more yellowish clay inclusions. Some cobbles appear to be limestone.
Coin 187 found in sieve.
Coin 188 found in sieve (clipped).

We found the bottom of this fill level as we came down on a much ligher level, which looks as though it might be a surface. Directly above this possible surface, there was a concentration of white/yellow lumestone chunks and dust and mortar (or plaster?). The level it sits on is yellowish. After closer inspection, the material right above the newly exposed level appears to be limestone and mortar. A sample was taken for further consideration (Thrown 2018). This exposed level may have been another working surface. Though it appears better preserved as a surface even prior to the limestone activity on it. There are remnants of the overlying limestone/mortar dressing as well as a small patch in the center of the southern third of the section.
Coin 189 found at N 1073.15 E 129.85 H 84.263, which is in the NW corner of the section.
There is mortar around the edges of the section next to the apse. It extends out from the apse ca. 10-15 cm.
