| Notes: | Context 128 is the cut for Grave 2014-01. The skeleton is Context 37. The fill is Context 13. This cut was originally associated with skeleton Context 54 because of the high elevation of the skull. When we discovered a second skull at the S end of the grave, we realized that this was a later grave that had truncated skeleton Context 54. We then realized that we had excavated the northern part of the cut without having distinguished it as such. The top of the cut was only preserved at the E and S. The W side of the grave is formed by wall Context 58. On the E and W the cut was roughly lined with tile fragments that join those used to cover the skeleton. The overall shape was sub-rectangular, though it juts out slightly at the E, possibly due to the truncation of th cut of the earlier grave, Grave 2014-05. Cut 128 truncates earlier cut Context 165. Later Notes (29/4/14): Based on a close reading of NB 864, we believe that Cut 128 was cut into Floor 5 of the previous excavations of this room, B56, dated to the 1260s-1270s based on pottery. Further excavation carried out in this area may have destroyed the S portion of the top of the cut (see NB 864 B56 ff.). The cut was sealed by Floor 4, dated to the last quarter of the 13th c (NB 864 B52). | |
