Context:   13
Date:   2014/04/08
Stratum:   Soft to very soft fill of a grave with occasional areas of more compacted clay, particularly along the edges of the deposit; in general very silty
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark greyish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   Grave 2014-01 is east of and abutting Wall Context 58 in Unit II Room 6. It is oriented roughly N-S. It is bounded by Context 128, a cut. An earlier grave, Grave 2014-05, appears to have been truncated by the burial of the infant skeleton Context 37 buried in Grave 2014-01.
The cut Context 128 was lined with four large fragments of a tile with pale yellow fabric with frequent voids and occasional large black inclustions - one placed vertically on each side of skeleton Context 37, one covering the skull, and one covering the torso. Smaller tile fragments of different fabrics were found near the tile covering the skull both to the N and the S. Beneath the skeleton were a few additional pieces of tile, which may have been intended as a lining. Additionally, the soil beneath the skeleton was very compacted.
The fill of the grave was fairly soft with some clayey patches throughout. No clear cut for Skeleton Context 37 was distinguished at the N, where the truncation of the earlier grave occurred. We suspect we might have excavated away the cut in this area, thinking that the skull of the earlier skeleton (now Context 54) was within this grave. The exposure of the room since 1996 made it difficult to discern soil changes.
Beneath skeleton Context 37 and to the N extending to the skull of skeleton Context 54 we detected a noticably softer fill that may be associated with the burial of skeleton Context 54. As the conservator removed the skeleton Context 37, she also observed the softer fill and noted that it felt "hollow". We have decided to dig this softer soil as a separate fill -Context 130.
From this context and associated with the burial are a lead disc with string hole (MF 2014-1), two glass sherds, and ceramics. Particularly to the S a large amount of jumbled bone, probably disturbed from other burials in the area, was also found.
Following the removal of the skeleton and this fill, we began to excavate Context 130 associated with Grave 2014-05 below.

The fill of this grave is dated by pottery to the mid-13th c. We believe that the cut (Context 128) was cut into Floor 5 of the earlier excavations (see NB 864 B56) dated to the 1260s to 1270s based on pottery. Grave 2014-01 must therefore postdate this floor. Other burials associated with this floor are 1996-1, 1996-2, and 1996-4 (NB 864, p. 117).
