Stratum:   Inclusions: 40% total; ceramic (mostly roof tiles); stones (pebble to cobble, angular and irregular); cement; organic (roots and land snails; bone.
Description:   The soil color is dark brownish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is moderately sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   Context 14 is a deposit beneath the two fallen columns found between the pier bases during previous excavation of he church nave in 1990 (see NB 835, Basket 43, pp. 78-80; first uncovered, see NB 831, Basket 28, pp. 39-40). The columns were rolled outside of the excavation area after cleaning (context 7), revealing this deposit. Work proceeded from the N by triangle trowel in a single pass 2-3cm deep. The soil composition was similar to that of the cleaning but with more organic inclusions of roots and land snails, and more frequent inclusions of ceramics, which were primarily fragments of roof tiles. These were collected along with a stone architectural fragment. Work ceased and the context was closed when a layer of horizontally arranged roof tiles were uncovered, since the tiles in this deposit were randomly oriented.
Later notes: This context should probably be associated with the concentration of roof tiles (context 49) immediately below, since both are characterized by frequent tile inclusions. Both can perhaps be interpreted as levelling fill for the cementer/plaster floor bedding (context 47).
