Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the S. The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy clay.
Notes:   Context 162 was the fill of a pit in the N-central part of Room 8, Unit II. The cut of the pit is Context 159. Originally it was interpreted as a depression into which the floor surface preserved in the S part of the room had sunk as a result of settling into a pit below. As we dug, the fill was a uniformly soft sandy clay with relatively little material in the upper elevations. Material increased somewhat as we continued, though it was still not densely concentrated. Material consisted of large fragments of ceramics, tile, and bone. When the soft fill was removed, we reached a harder interface that seems to be the bottom of the pit.
This depression seems to have initially been discovered in NB 877 B113, and NB 877 B114 was directly laid over Context 162. Here, they recorded that the depression was covered by tile fall and debris associated with a destruction. The pit therefore was cut into an abraded floor (Context 153) in Room 8 prior to the destruction of the room. What appeared to be an overlying floor may have washed down from the surrounding surface.
A lower clay surface also cut through by the pit is visible in the N and E sides of the cut.
