Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the N. The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Context 174 is an ashy deposit to the E of and laid against the bench foundation lining the E face of Wall Context 157 in Room 8, Unit II. It was revealed beneath the surface excavated in Context 168. It was confined to an area immediate before the bench foundation, though a small concentration of carbonized material was excavated in the E half of the room in Context 168. These were not directly related.
The nature of this deposit is not clear. It may represent the remnants of indoor cooking, then forming a lens in the fill before the likely floor was laid over it. The concentration near the bench may be significant, but the relationship between the two functionally is unclear. The ashy deposit does seem to post-date the bench, as it did not appear to continue beneath it. However, the deposit sloped down to the W, and may run under at a deeper level, though this seems unlikely. We exposed a harder level below and closed the context. This same harder soil seems to continue underneath the bench foundation, excavated in Context 175. The ashy deposit and the bench foundation are therefore likely to have been laid on the same fill.
Because of the concentration of carbonized and ashy deposits, a sample was taken for flotation of about 10% from the full area of the context.
