Stratum:   Mostly field stones, with tiles and pot sherds.
Description:   The soil color is dark brownish black. The soil compaction is hard. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   On 9/4/14 we began excavating the rubbly layer on the E. end of the unexcavated baulk W. of room 5 and NW of the Frankish church's narthex in unit 2, hoping to reveal a single surface contiguous with the one below context 17. The fill of this layer had, in addition to being very pebbly with large field stones, a larger proportion of roof tiles and field stones (as opposed to small stones), though beneath the rubble the dirt was more free of stone inclusions in general than context 17. Visible in the scarp are tiles not dissimilar from the tiles in the layer below the rubble layer (EM road, context 24). We decided to sieve and after finding nothing of particular interest ceased at 50%. It is unclear if this surface was purposefully placed on top of the N/S-oriented EM road (TESE 24) in the way that 17 seems to have been or if it is the result of high amounts of traffic over time. The presence of numerous tiles suggests an accumulated of debris that became solidifed over time.
