Notes:   Nicol Anastasatou
This context corresponds to a cleaning operation carried out for conservation works in the S/W corner of Room A, Unit 2.
We begun excavataion by removing the layer of top soil in the west edge of the trench. The context lies at the western edge of the excavated area; this area is west of Unit 2, Room A and east of Area 3. It is bounded on the eastern edge by the foot path. In the south is Wall 8. The western edge of the excavation area was characterized by a dark brownish black soil which was clearly a different context than the eastern area, closer to Unit 2. To the south is a wall which appeared to continue north beneath the top soil, so removal of this layer was twofold: to identify a possible robbing trench of this wall or to see the wall's continuation north. The western boundary was chosen to align with the grid and the dark brownish black soil continues to the west.
In the SW corner the trench was given an arbigtrary edge in order to preserve the wheel barrow path to the west. The soil does not continue to the northen boundary of the trench and is bounded on the east by previously exposed strones. After several passes, more stones that continue the wall to the north began to appear but of a lower course. In the northern area, where there were exposed stones, we have revealed a patch of blonde soil similar to saw dust in texture that is possibly dumped material from wall reconstuctions, according to the workmen. Both the blone and the northern stone cluster will be removed with this context once the dark brownish black is finished.
8/4/14:
We continued removing the top soil and in the morning we came down upon back fill cloth along the west edge near the center of the deposit. It is now clear that this area was previously backfilled which accounts for the very loose soil and blond "saw dust" lenses. There is also a large plastic backfill bag in the SW corner. It is now clear that the wall's northen extension had previously been found (Wall 4, NB 866). It has now been given a new context (Wall 8). It is also clear that the stone cluster to the north sits on the same backfill soil. We are removing them to expose the remaining mixed backfill.
After the removal of the stones and soil in the NE corner it is clear that all the backfill has been removed and has exposed unexcavated layers to the north of this context. The majority of the ceramics are large fragments of coarsewares, mostly handles and body sherds but also some rims. A few glazed pieces are also present.
