Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   207
Date:   2014/05/06
Stratum:   Inclusions of stones (mixed but mainly coarse pebbles), tiles, pottery, and bone (approximately 5%)
Description:   Top slope of the context is moderate down to the NE. The soil color is light greyish mixed. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is moderately sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   The soil surrounding the pit of context 31 is of a much lighter color and more clayey consistency than the earth of the general fill of context 200. We begin to remove this clayey earth in order to understand its relationship to the general fill.
The thickness of the clay layer varies across the area. In the area to the N of the pit it is removed after just a few centimeters of excavation. To the W and S, however, the clay deposit is thicker. The pit of context 31 has clearly cut right through this clay mass. The soft, dark earth consistent with that of the general fill is revealed underneath the clay. The color of the soil often appeared mixed as the dark, soft earth was underneath and even present within the clay. We decided to dry sieve this context in case the material found within it could distinguish this deposit from the general fill. It appears, however, that the larger general deposit runs underneath the entire clay layer. A large terracotta roof tile, pottery, bone, and glass were found within this context.
