Type:   Basket
Name:   Temple E, Southeast, context 216
Area:   Temple E, Southeast
Title:   General fill N of room G, 3rd lens from top
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   216
Date:   2014/05/06;2014/05/07
Stratum:   Inclusions of pebbles (stones mainly sub-rounded pebbles), tiles, pottery and bone (approximately 5%)
Description:   Top slope of the context is moderate down to the N. The soil color is very dark brownish black. The soil compaction is very soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Atfter having removed the clayey earth around the pit of context 31 we moved to the W to continue removing the general fill E of the N-S cut. We begin the removal of this fill of 6 May 2014 and continue for most of 7 May 2014.
There are lots of tree roots in this lens which likely explains the very soft consistency of the soil. The removal of this layer reveals a harder packed and browner lense uunderneath. We continue to dig with the small pick following the soft, dark earth around the NE curve of the pit of context 40 (approximately N1077.8 - 1077.2, E106.0 - 107.0). The area around N1076.9 E106.75 reveals a large lump of clayey earth whose interface with the soft dark fill is unclear. Further cleaning in this area reveals the interaction of several different lenses, including one hard clay layer sitting atop another at N1076.66 E106.99, perhaps following the line of the medium-sized tree root. The vertical scarp showing us this relationship is somewhat worrisome, and we hope that we have not dug completely through the cut of a pit, but it is illuminating the relationship between two clay surfaces in the corner at N1076.66 E107.12.
We then move further to the NE, around N1078.20 E105.33, to continue to remove the very soft, dark earth that may have been left due to the presence of tree roots. This area quickly becomes confusing as we reveal a patch of ash and what appears to be a cut in the layer with clayey earth around.
There are several elements in this layer that indicate that we may be revealing the top of a destruction layer. Two full profiles of vessels were found broken and lying horizontally, one at N1075.77 E105.02 H86.12, and the other at N1076.31 E106.34 H86.03. Bits of charcoal were found scattered in the context as well as one pocket of ashy soil. Pottery, bone, shell (2 quite large), iron, glass, and a gold and bronze thimble were found in this context. An iron object, perhaps part of a door hinge, was found at N1078.46 E105.93 H85.84 and extending to N1078.45 E105.77 H85.82.
