Description:   Top slope of the context is moderate down to the N. The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We begin removing the fifth lens of the substantial general fill in the area N of room G, unit 2. We proceed with small picks excavating up the slope to the S, beginning on 8 May 2014 and concluding on 9 May 2014. We leave a ca. 10 cm martyr around the N-S cut of the earlier excavation at E104.30 to prevent contamination from our continued removal of context 198, the previous excavation's backfill.
Near the S scarp of the previous excavation we reveal a line of three stones set on approximately the same elevation at 86.05 and running E-W on a line at approximately N1075.80. We are interested in understsanding if these stones relate in some way to the architectural features revealed by previous excavations in rooms F and G of Unit 2. We will need to remove more of the general fill in the area before any structural relationship can be clarified.
This layer of the fill can be distinguished from those above it by the large amount of small shells and fragments of glass vessels collected during excavation. A large concentration of glass sherds were found at N1076.18 E105.81 H86.02 which may join to form a complete profile or even a nearly complete vessel. We also removed the broken full profile of a Protomaiolica bowl uncovered at N1075.60 E105.05 H86.12 during the removal of context 216, the third lens of this general fill. The complete bowl can be reconstructed from the rest of the joining fragments collected in this context.
Two coins (2014-98 and 2014-100) were discovered in the dry sieve. Two baskets of pottery and one box of bone and shell were collected from this context.
