Type:   Basket
Name:   Temple E, Southeast, context 255
Area:   Temple E, Southeast
Title:   Cut for pit N room G, Unit 2
Notebook:   1108
Context:   255
Date:   2014/05/12
Description:   The context shape in plan is oval. The top break of the cut is sharp. The sides of the cut are vertical. The break at the base of the cut is not perceptible. Truncation: W wall of cut slopes due to destruction collapse.
Notes:   We begin to find the edges of a large pit after removing context 236, the fifth lense of the general fill. We search for the edges of the cut of this pit using the point of a small pick gently and the triangular trowel. The cut takes the shape of a rounded rectangle / elongated oval and completely surrounds the pit previously excavated as context 235. We define the extent of the large oval cut in plan and remove the fill of this as contexts 256 and 259.
The walls of this cut are vertical on all sides except for the W, where stacked tiles and clay preserve traces of collapse. Large cobble stones and boulders are visible in the S and E walls of the cut, perhaps belonging to surrounding structures. We did not excavate the pit completely due to the presence of large boulders and ashlar blocks at elevation 85.02 to 84.73.
The size and shape of this cut are similar to wells cut in the Ottoman period. The date of the pottery found in the fill may support this identification.
