Corinth Basket: Temple E, Southeast, context 272
Collection:   Corinth
Type:   Basket
Name:   Temple E, Southeast, context 272
Area:   Temple E, Southeast
Title:   Clayey fill N room F, unit 2
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   272
Date:   2014/05/13
Stratum:   Inclusions of sub-rounded pebbles, tiles, pottery, and little bone (approximately 7%)
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light brownish mixed. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   The layer of clayey fill extending toward the NE from the area of general fills already removed has been visible since 5 May 2014. The interface between this layer and the clayey surface underneath it was exposed at N1076.40 E106.90 H86.10. We begin to remove this layer with small picks moving to the ENE. We soon clear the top of the wall running E-W at approximately N1078.0. We cleear the clayey earth and softer brown soil above it. We characterize this context as mixed because it is a dump fill of differing lenses of greyish clay and soft brown silt. The top of the wall is now exposed to its westernmost preserved point at E106.83. Further excavation around this wall will be needed to determine whether it is in fact the N boundary of the complex, Unit 2.
Some pottery, bone, glass, and iron bits were removed from this context.
The area of excavation directly N of this E-W wall (wall 110) has proven to be difficult and unclear, and there is a strong possibility that this area has been contaminated by backfill of early modern excavations. Notes added 21/5/14, K.E.L.
