Title:   Chunky fill in pit room 7
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   274
Date:   2014/05/13
Lot:   Lot 2014-023
Stratum:   50-60% inclusions, lots of animal bone, ceramic, building materials (tiles), shell, charred bits.
Description:   The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   After revealing the surface under 260 and 263, we were finally able to explore the chunky fill below (part of which might have been overdug by 247 and 263). This deposit appears to have a lot of animal b one and organic material (such as charred bits) - so the deposit will be sampled for flotation.
The chunky fill of 274 was traced to the south, leaving the harder deposits on the southern and western edges. It remains unclear what exactly these harder surfaces are related to (whether a wall or not). It does seem clear, though, that 274 is part of a trash pit (given the organic remains). It is interesting to consider when this dumping event occurred and its interaction with other structures in the room (e.g., the harder deposits on the south and west). Tracing the fill to the south has revealed a more clayey deposit underneath. This particular deposit could be associated with the harder deposit continuing to the south.
As we continued excavating, it became clear that the pit of 274 cut into the harder deposit to the south. We came to the bottom of the pit, and the slope of the deposit gradually sloped up to the southern edge.
The relationship of 274 and WC 157 is interesting. It appears that WC 157 cut into deposit 274, given that the remains of 274 are directly next to WC 157. The wall seems to be constructed without a foundation trench--or one that was taken up by the physical remains of the wall (157).
274 might reveal activity that was happening in what is now Room 7 before Room 7 was actually Room 7 (as we know it).
At 12.20 on 13 May 2014, it was noticed that the elevation was off, but elevations should be accurate.
