Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   287

Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the S. The soil color is dark brownish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We continued excavation works to the west side of the preserved road 226. Our aim was to investigate the robbing trench of the wall, which was revealed by the removal of 276 (possible continuation of wall 8?). It is likely that this area has received several backfills and was later compacted by modern foot-traffic through the NW passage. It seems that this area can be associated with basket 57 (NB 839) and basket 76 (NB 834). According to the 1995 excavation it is almost completely filled with backfill from Mrs. Kosmopoulos' trench, dug to Neolithic levels (pre 2nd World War). For this reason we decided to section the robbing trench of the wall to the south and the north in order to avoid contamination from the upper backfill levels. Furthermore, we decided to dig to the north and south side in two different contexts, so that we could be more accurate. 287 serves as the North fill for the N-S wall west of the road. The removal of 287 revealed four rows of the wall and a hard surface of a dark brown soil to the north. It is possible that the wall continues to the north, but it was completely robbed out. It is noteworthy that the fill of 287 is probably contemporary with the fill of the robbing trench to the south.
